Flush with Success - Poker Run 6 rally, Lanier Harbor Marina, GA - Brief Article

Boat/US Magazine, Jan, 2000

With 200 boats competing in its Poker Run 6 this fall, Lanier Harbor Marina, a BOAT/U.S. Cooperating Marina in Lake Lanier, GA, hosted one big "card" game.

Poker Runs for cars and motorcycles have been around for years, but they're fairly new to the boating world. Many are held as fund-raisers for various boating groups or safety projects. For those interested in playing a hand, here's how the one in Lake Lanier works: Each boat uses various clues to find five different check points around the lake. When a boat finds a check point, its time is recorded and someone from the crew draws a playing card out of a hat. The Poker Run has two winners: the boat holding the best poker hand out of all the competitors, and the boat that finishes the course closest to the designated time.

Congratulations to Scott Richeter of Gainesville, GA, whose full house won the best poker hand, and to Tommy Smith of Roswell, GA, who came in first overall by being just 19 seconds off the designated time. So far, no one has managed to get four of a kind and win the Poker Run's Grand Prize, a $75,000 Mariah sport boat.
