Float Along, Little Dogie - Coast Guard frees cow stuck in mud off Freeport, TX - Brief Article

Boat/US Magazine, Jan, 2000

Herding cattle is not part of the job description, but a passing Coast Guard patrol boat in Freeport, TX, rustled up to shore and managed to free a 900-pound cow that was stuck in the mud on the banks of the San Bernard River, reports Coast Guard magazine.

The "bedraggled bovine" was nearly neck-deep in the mud when the boat's crew spotted her. Of course, mariners are good with ropes, so after hoisting a line to the heifer, the Coasties used their 21-foot inflatable to pull her loose. After feeding her (hardtack and sea biscuits, maybe, but certainly not hamburger), her rescuers turned her over to local animal control officers.
