Boat/US Magazine, May, 2002

Federal law requires marine manufacturers to issue defect recall notices when boats or related equipment contains "defects which create a substantial risk of personal injury." The U.S. Coast Guard recently published the following defect recall notices. For more information contact the manufacturers directly or call the Coast Guard's Info-Line, 800-368-5647.

New recalls are listed monthly at www.BoatUS.com/recall.> * American Suzuki Motor Corp., 714-996-7040 (Recall campaign #010159T)2000-01 DF90 & DF115 outboards: Undcr rapid acceleration clutch rod may contact steering bracket and bend clutch rod. Clutch shaft holder may break, resulting in loss of gear-change ability. In addition, seal may be damaged, causing water intrusion into lower unit. Fix is to install improved upper motor mounts, shift guide housing kit & dust cover kit. Models: 2001 DF90 09001F-151013 through 152573; 2001 DF115 11501F-151046 through 153960; 2002 DF90 09001F-251066 through 251077; 2002 DF115 11501F-251257 through 251314 & 11501F-251527 through 251540.

* Genmar/Lowe Boats, 417-532-9101 (Recall campaign #010104T) 2000-2001 Sun Cruiser: Genmar purchased Lowe from OMC earlier this year. OMC had started a campaign to replace fuel tanks in some Suncruiser pontoon boats because tanks split and leak fuel into the pontoon. Genmar is completing that campaign. Tanks involved were made by Fikes Plastics, also known as Rotational Products, and are 24- and 35-gallons with s/nos 001431 to 003129.

* Glastron/Genmar Industries, 320.632.8395 2000-01 Glastron GX 225 (HINs between GLA21480 and GLA28821): Glastron has learned that pedestal seat bases on some GX 225 models have pulled out of the floor. Dealers will inspect to ensure that pedestal screws are 2-1/2" long and anchored into aluminum plating under the floor. If no aluminum plating is present, a plate must be added under the floor prior to re-installation of the seat base. If the screws are 1-1/2" long, they must be replaced with 1/4 x 2-1/2" stainless steel screws.

* U.S. Marine, 360-435-5571 (Recall campaign #010178S) 1997-2000 Maxum 3000 SCR Suncruiser: U.S. Marine/Maxum Marine has determined that the isolation bulkhead used to separate the port fuel tank from the cabin area in 1997 through 2001 Maxum 3000 SCR Suncruisers may not comply with U.S.C.G. regulations. They are recalling the boats to correctly seal the port closeout area. If gasoline fumes are present in the fuel tank compartment they could leak into the cabin.

* Wellcraft Marine/Aquasport, 800-755-1099 (Recall campaign #010147S) Various 2000 and 2001 models: Wellcraft and Aquasport are replacing the original equipment generator fuel filter on 2000 and 2001 models because the filter does not meet criteria for fire resistance.
