Chesapeake bay editor wins Farnham award - Boat U.S. Reports

Boat/US Magazine, May, 2003

Chesapeake Bay magazine's Executive Editor, Wendy Mitman Clarke, was honored by BoatU.S. recently with the 2002 Moulton H. "Monk" Farnham Award for Excellence in Editorial Commentary.

The first female editor to win the award since it was established in 1996, Clarke was recognized for the deft editorial touch of her monthly column and for her keen eye for the power of words.

The award was established by BoatU.S. in memory of Monk Farnham, the former chairman of the BoatU.S. National Advisory Council and outspoken editor of a number of boating magazines. It recognizes editors of boating and fishing magazines who have a passion for boating, a crusading spirit and a willingness to use their editorial page to lead the debate on issues facing our community and industry.

The award was presented at the annual meeting of Boating Writers International during the Miami Boat Show by BoatU.S. Magazine Editor Michael Sciulla who was recently elected president of the writer's organization.

The Monk Farnham award includes a hand-crafted trophy depicting a quill pen drawing inspirational "ink" from a series of rolling waves as well as a check for $1,000. Previous winners include Skip Allen, former editor and publisher of Southern Boating, Bill Sisson, editor of Soundings, Bill Schanen, editor and publisher of Sailing magazine, Matt Trulio, former editor of Powerboat magazine, Chris Landry of Powerboat Reports and Herb McCormick of Cruising World magazine.

The judges for this year's award included Sciulla, as well as, Tony Gibbs, a former editor of Yachting and The New Yorker; Chuck Husick, an Ocean Navigator contributing editor and former president of Chris Craft Boats and Dean Clarke, executive editor of Sport Fishing magazine.
