Grassroots Grants Applications Available

Boat/US Magazine, July, 1999

Are there boating safety issues you would like to address in your community? The BOAT/U.S. Foundation for Boating Safety is now accepting grant applications through November 1 for funding in 2000. Volunteer groups that are nonprofit and not dependent upon government funding are eligible for grants up to $5,000 as part of the Foundation's "Grassroots Grants" program. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas are also encouraged to apply through their National Board, Inc.

The Foundation is interested in supporting projects that promote safe boating in creative, innovative ways. For example, the Tar River Power Squadron of North Carolina distributed 1,000 Boating Safety Coloring Calendars to local children. Of the 175 groups that applied last year, 28 were selected to share over $46,000.

Since the grants were launched in 1989, the BOAT/U.S. Foundation has awarded over $450,000 to worthwhile volunteer boating safety programs.
