New female flag officer - Tangled Line

Boat/US Magazine, July, 2003

A one-star admiral has become the first woman to head up the U.S. Coast Guard's Fifth District. In April, RADM Sally Brice-O'Hara took over the top position in the mid-atlantic district, which stretches from New Jersey to North Carolina, at ceremonies in Portsmouth, VA, district headquarters.

Coming up through the ranks from Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, VA, in 1975 she started out, ironically in fisheries law enforcement in the Fifth District. Before becoming district commander, Brice-O'Hara was director of personnel management for the Coast Guard and also commanded

Coast Guard Station Cape May, NJ, and Group Baltimore, MD. She follows in the footsteps of the Coast Guard's first female admiral, RADM Vivien S. Crea, who took command of the First District, headquartered in Boston, MA, in May 2002.
