Coastie Is Honored

Boat/US Magazine, Sept, 1999

George Lucas' creations for the Star Wars "prequel" may have grabbed public attention this summer, but another robot is causing quite a stir in the Ohio area. Coastie, a robotic boat modeled after a Coast Guard cutter, serves as a mascot for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. At boat shows, schools and hospitals, Coastie has entertained and educated thousands of children and adults about boating safety since being "launched" in 1997.

The idea for Coastie came when BOAT/U.S. member and Auxiliarist Mike Robeano saw a similar robot fashioned after a police car, which kids loved. After enlisting the support of Ohio Division of Watercraft, Coastie became a reality and an instant hit with children, helping them to learn important boat and water safety lessons.

Coastie has taken "cruises" to boat shows, schools and parades. Monthly visits to Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH, really cheers up the patients. Robeano and the radio-controlled ship recently won the prestigious national Boating Education Advancement Award by the National Safe Boating Council.
