Geared up for Amistad - Boat US Reports

Boat/US Magazine, Sept, 2002

BoatU.S. is helping Amistad sailor Kenneath Mobley weather the storm with a donation of a complete set of foul weather gear. Mobley, of Alexandria, VA, was recently selected to participate in the Amistad's Friendship Tour 2002, a four-month sail that will teach school children the rich history of the 129-foot vessel.

During the tour, Mobley, who already has seafaring experience as a mate on Alexandria Seaport Foundation's 42-foot dory, Potomac, will perform many tasks from sailing the vessel to speaking to the school groups.

The original Amistad was an early 19th century, Spanish-owned cargo schooner and became famous in 1839 for the first successful slave revolt in America, and a subsequent Supreme Court case, setting Amistad's slaves free and paving the way for abolition of slavery. Today, the vessel's primary mission is promoting harmony among all races. For more information, visit Amistadamerica.org.
