Foundation Aids Oil Spill Prevention

Boat/US Magazine, Nov, 2001

The BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water and Region 5 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have joined forces in the Great Lakes area to help marinas and boaters reduce the number and quantity of fuel spills in 2001 and 2002.

The Great Lakes Oil Spill Prevention Project is designed to help marinas better understand and comply with the current federal law, the Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Regulations for storing petroleum products. It is also designed to help area boat owners learn practical ways to cleanly maintain, operate, and refuel boats.

Information for marinas and boaters will be available online and in print. Training workshops for marina operators needing SPCC plans will be in several locations over the next year.
