Tenders Issued Soon For Cairo Line 3 - Transit News

International Railway Journal, Nov, 2001

TENDERS for construction of Line 3 of Cairo Metro are due to be issued early next year. The full 33km line will run from Cairo international airport in the east, via the city centre, to Embaba and Mohandessin in the west. The total cost is expected to be about $US 2.6 billion. Financing options include a proposal from Japan for a long-term concessionary loan.

The first stage of the line, running 11km from Ataba Square in the city centre to Heliopolis, a suburb in the northeast, will cost $US 1.17 billion. The 4.3km section from Ataba Square to Abbassiya is likely to be built first.

Systra, France, working with local partners, Arab Consulting Engineers, has won a contract to prepare technical designs that will be incorporated in the full tender documents to be issued by the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT). Systra has also prepared a transport master plan for Cairo that includes six metro lines to be completed by 2022.
