A new 50km line is being built from the newly-opened container terminal at Olya, on the Caspian Sea, to the existing Astrakhan-Grozny main line. The $US 100 million line will be financed jointly by Russian Railways and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Olya is expected to handle 4 million tonnes of freight by 2005, rising to 8 million tonnes by 2010.
