Westrail Freight Sale This Year - Western Australia to privatize Westrail Freight - Brief Article

International Railway Journal, May, 2000

WESTERN Australia's state parliament is to consider an amended Bill which would allow the proposed sale of the state-owned railfreight operator, Westrail Freight, to go ahead later this year.

Following previous delays in the privatisation process, the latest Bill will include new conditions that the purchaser of Westrail Freight must establish separate operating companies to manage the infrastructure and track access, enabling intra-state services to be operated by competitors, and that the state government must upgrade the Kalgoorlie--Esperance line to accommodate 23-tonne axleload freight wagons operating at up to 80km/h.
