Six Consortia To Bid In Salvador - Brief Article

THE Brazilian state of Bahia has published the bidding rules for the six consortia which have been pre-qualified to bid for a contract to build the first phase of a metro in Salvador. Bids are due by May 28 so that construction can begin in September. It is hoped to open the metro in 2002.

The first phase will be 11.4km long including 1.4km in tunnel. There will be eight stations. The total cost is estimated at $US 307 million. The World Bank will provide 50% of the funds, with the rest shared between the state government, Salvador municipality, and private companies.

The six consortia are: Spie Batignolles and Spie Enertrans, France, with two Brazilian companies; Siemens, Germany, with two Brazilian contractors; a Spanish-Argentine-Brazilian grouping; Alstom, France, with two Brazilian companies; an Italian-Portuguese group; and Constran, Brazil.
