Second Malpensa link planned

International Railway Journal, June, 2004

SWISS Federal Railways (SBB) and Italian State Railways (FS) together with the Swiss canton of Ticino and the Italian province of Lombardy are planning a second rail link to Milan Malpensa airport. It would run from Lugano, Switzerland, via Mendrisio, Varese, and Gallarate.

The project will involve upgrading existing lines and constructing a new 5.7km line to link the Varese-Porto Ceresio line with a disused industrial line recently purchased by SBB between Stabio and Mendrisio.

The estimated cost of the project is 272 million [euro], with Italy contributing two-thirds. The aim is to have the line in operation by 2010.
