Kawasaki to win Indian wagon contract?

International Railway Journal, Sept, 2007

KAWASAKI Heavy Industries, Japan, is reportedly close to winning a $US 4.2 billion contract to supply 1900 wagons for India. The wagons will be used on the planned 1483km dedicated freight line from Delhi to Mumbai.

If the company is successful, it will produce the wagons over a 15-year period from 2009. Kawasaki is also in talks with Indian Railways to start joint production of other wagons from 2009.

A joint-venture in which Kawasaki would have a controlling interest, could be set up as early as the second quarter of next year.
