New York orders 620 metro cars
International Railway Journal, Sept, 2007
NEW YORK Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has voted to exercise options to acquire an additional 620 metro cars for New York City Transit at a cost of $US 1.12 billion.
Alstom will supply 360 R160 metro cars, while Kawasaki will supply the remaining 260 vehicles. The trains will be delivered in 2008-09.
Bodyshells for the Alstom vehicles will be manufactured in Lapa, Brazil, with final assembly and testing being carried out at Hornell in the United States.
The option was part of an original contract awarded in 2002 for an initial order of 660 cars, the first of which entered service last year.
