Rio to buy new trains
International Railway Journal, Sept, 2008
CENTRAL, a subsidiary of Rio de Janeiro's Department of Transport, plans to invite bids in December for a fleet of 30 four-car emus for SuperVia, which has a concession to operate the commuter rail network in Rio de Janeiro. The contract, which will be worth about $US 240 million, will be financed by the World Bank.
SuperVia acquired 20 new trains in 2004 from Hyundai Rotem, Korea, as part of its concession agreement.
Since it took over Rio's commuter rail network 10 years ago SuperVia has seen passenger numbers increase from 150,000 per day to more than half a million.
