That darn editor … again - Crossfire: letters to GUNS - Letter to the Editor

Guns Magazine, March, 2004

A handful of readers took great glee in pointing out the mis-captioned Ruger singleshot on page 26 of the January, '04 issue. Yes, it is of course a restocked Ruger No. 3, rather than a No. 1 as I incorrectly labeled it. Here are Dave Anderson's observations about this particular Ruger:

The rifle is a No. 3 in .375 Winchester, fitted with a stock from a No. 1. It looks nice and "different," but actually turned out not to be a great idea. The shape of the lever is not compatible with a pistol grip stock, and in recoil the lever gives the second finger a solid whack. The original No. 3 stock was a straight grip so this problem never arose.

Also appearing in the January issue were several especially grievous errors, most particularly the ".095-inch diameter barrel" which should of course have been .950-inch. Pretty humbling considering I used to make my living behind a lathe and milling machine.

Lastly, several spelling errors also raised their ugly heads, but in this department I take comfort in the words of "Old Hickory," Andrew Jackson, who opined, "It's a damn poor mind that can think of only one way to spell a word." Ed.
