The shooters ridge steady point handgun rest

Guns Magazine,  July, 2008  by Mike Cumpston

The highly popular Outers Pistol Perch was a long-standing favorite among gun writers and handgun enthusiasts. Now renamed, it has found a new home under the Alliant Technosystems (ATK) umbrella, a product of Onalaska Operations with distribution by Shooters Ridge and the full-range of mail order and Internet sources.

The Steady Point sits on a rubber-buffered 3-point base and features a full range of adjustment for height and angle. Major structural parts are of steel and it is readily taken down for storage and transport. The front rest is V-shaped and constructed of steel with heavy vinyl coating. Older versions of the Pistol Perch had a fleece-like pad on the rear rest. The Steady Point buttrest is padded and sheathed in leather. All movable elements are locked firmly into place with thumbable screws. Even with the major elements locked in place, fine adjustment of elevation remains available by way of the turnbuckle running fore and aft under the central beam.

The front V-rest does a good job of centering most handgun barrels while the vinyl coating minimizes or eliminates barrel bounce that can affect point of impact. When we used the rest with a Uberti Single Action Army, we used additional cloth padding to create an even bed. I rested my Les Baer TR Special with the front of the frame in the V and the butt fairly far forward on the rear pad. I put five rounds of Black Hills 230-grain +P hollowpoint on the bottom half of a 2-1/2" vegetable can lid in a neat 1-1/2" cluster at 25 yards. There was no shift in the known point of impact. The rest remained in place with no recoil-induced shifting about on the bench. While the Baer bounced around considerably, it was easy to reposition the pistol for succeeding shots.

The Steady Point, and its direct ancestor, has earned the respect of serious handgun shooters. It is available at bargain prices ranging from the suggested retail $66.95 downward. I found mine for less than $50 at the Midway USA Internet Store.
