One hundred years of memories

Guns Magazine, August, 2004 by Glenn Barnes

Targets such as these are clearly fun to shoot and easy to make or acquire, however, nothing beats the pure pleasure of inspired targets. How do you construct an inspired target? Well actually you can't, but here's how it works--grab your trusty Red Ryder or whichever Daisy air rifle suits your fancy, filler' up with amino and head for the nearest field or forest.

See that clump of dirt over there, the one with two blades of grass poking through the top? It's really a spike buck! Shoot him! Shoot him before he runs away!

Is that a big old stump over there or is it the biggest black bear in the woods? Shoot him! Shoot him before he runs away!

Is that a knot way up there in the tree or is it a squirrel? Whoops, it is a squirrel, let's watch him awhile and move on.

"Daddy, are those deer or raccoon tracks?" Those are deer tracks honey; let me show you the difference.

Now you understand inspired targets; they are truly an inspiration, especially when viewed through the eyes of a child, even one 40 years old.

Let's Continue The Tradition

Initially, this article was to be written about Daisy's legendary "Red Ryder" air rifle; instead, I've come to the conclusion Daisy Outdoor Products is the true legend, and the good ol' Red Ryder is only a part of the story. How else can you explain the joy associated with shooting a part of your past while proudly watching your children create their own shooting future?

For more than 100 years Daisy has allowed young boy's and girl's imaginations to carry them wherever their hearts desired, be it a shootout at the OK Corral, or a soldier storming the beaches of Normandy. And in the process they've taught over 7 million of us how to shoot responsibly and safely. Yes, Daisy Outdoor Products is a true American legend, and I've also discovered that neat little carbine with "Red Ryder" proudly emblazoned on the stock is just as much fun to shoot today as it was a few decades ago.

Oh, by the way, target number 1,001 is still on the loose; guess my eyes aren't as sharp as they once were. Looks like I'm no daisy.
