Quarter master: the Pocket Smith II a 1911 multi-tool from Caspian arms

Multi-tools are a wonderful concept, affording the user with a broad selection of implements which, in practical application, are seldom exactly right for any given job. They are the mechanical expression of "Jack of all trades, master of none." In contrast, a thoughtfully conceived, purpose-made multi-tool can meet a specific need to perfection while retaining general versatility.

The Pocket Smith II is just such a tool. The central feature is a heavy duty, 2-sided bushing wrench configured for the standard 1911 on the one side and Officer's Model on the other and alternating as light-duty pliers and wire cutter. Three screwdriver blades are properly sized for grip panel screws, grip screw bushings and sight adjustment. One Allen wrench addresses the more avant-garde grip screws popular on some models while the other is useful for dismounting 2-piece guide rods. There is a properly sized punch for removing the mainspring housing pin. In addition to the 1911 oriented features, there is a general purpose 2.5" knife blade and double-sided metal file. The handle-half housing the blade, screwdrivers and file has a heavy spring with positive retention of the flatware while in the open position. This contributes to ease of use and enhanced user safety. All handle-mounted tools are readily accessible with the bushing wrench/ pliers in the closed position.

The Pocket Smith II is 6.5" long when open and about 4.25" closed. This second generation of the Caspian tool is predominately of stainless steel with improved handling characteristics by virtue of the hand-conforming textured aluminum handles. A clearly labeled nylon belt pouch is included. The Pocket Smith is available through multiple mail order sources. I found mine in the Dillon Blue Press. Part number G 38-18005, $34.95.
