The Black Arrow Vin Suprynowicz, 2005
We hear the Second Amendment is the ultimate guarantor of liberty, but how many of us take those abstract words and comprehend their ultimate consequences? If the time comes when Americans must again take up arms against tyranny, how many will be able to set aside a lifetime of conditioning and initiate force against those in power?
This is the world of The Black Arrow, the first novel by syndicated columnist Vin Suprynowicz. Set in the near future in the metropolis of Gotham, the title is derived from the persona of a resistance leader. Andrew Fletcher is a lethal Barman, a billionaire and former rock star who dons a mask and stalks the rooftops at night, using a compound bow and black arrows to kill corrupt authorities.

Why not a gun? Projecting from current technology already being deployed in some cities, Gotham is blanketed with a network of sensors that can pinpoint gunfire to response teams. Suprynowicz also develops characters by borrowing from the news accounts of today--the government abuses that lead to their taking up arms have already happened in real life.
While this book has received wide praise in liberty circles, it is not for everyone. Some may not be ready to accept tactics of freedom fighters as substantively different from those of terrorists--to them, I would point to the underground resistance against the Nazis. Also, explicit sexual passages may offend some, but the most graphic occur to illustrate the ugliness of tyrants coercing their subjects.
If you can deal with that and want to read a thrilling adventure, if you want to see someone strike back at the abuses against our rights, and have hope that such a thing will be possible should the need arise, you'll want to read The Black Arrow.
