RAs RULE: College life isn't only about academics. It's about living in a brand-new social situation, away from home. With high energy and willingness to help, Resident Assistants (RAs) are carefully selected and trained to help students, especially freshmen, fit in and feel comfortable. Typically, they resolve roommate conflicts, recommend clubs and organizations to join, and plan programs that take place in the residence halls. RAs are assigned a space in a residence hall (and are provided with free room and board), with 30-35 students to oversee. According to Joanne, being an RA has been, "a great learning experience!"
New Digs Athletic Center, Hamden, CT ****
Boomer the Bobcat will have a new home, as will four of the 21 Division I men's and women's varsity teams. A ground-breaking ceremony has been held for the new athletic center, which begins the development of the Sherman Avenue campus. Plans call for a 157,000-sq.-ft. arena, a 3,500-seat basketball court and a 3,500-seat hockey rink. The center is expected to be completed in January of 2007.
JUST LIKE ESPN: The School of Communications has taken a major technological leap forward with the installation of a brand new, fully digital, high-definition television production facility in the Ed McMahon Mass Communications Center, which even exceeds the current capability of many broadcast stations in the country.
On the Campus
Coffee Talk Students can chat with School of Business alumni over coffee, with a new series of networking opportunities, aptly named "Conversations over Coffee."
Spring Breaks With Tradition: During spring break, Albert Schweitzer Institute sent 21 Quinnipiac students and faculty members to Barbados to work in a women's shelter and, in Nicaragua, to build an addition to a school.
Feature flick: Ireland ***** Quinnipiac's Semester Program in Ireland hosted a two-day Irish Film Festival. Students were invited to ask questions about the program while watching an eclectic fare of Irish films, including a comedy, musical and drama.
Financial News: The Quinnipiac School of Business, accredited by AACSB International, announces the Terry W. Goodwin '67 Financial Technology Center --a high-tech simulated trading floor providing students an opportunity to access real-time financial data, conduct interactive trading simulations, and develop financial models. It's the first of its kind in Connecticut.
