.22 WMR rifle ballistic in a handgun?

American Handgunner, Sept-Oct, 2005 by Dave Anderson

The .22 Winchester Magnum cartridge is one I've always liked for small game hunting and pest control. At 1,900 to 2,000 fps they're much faster than high speed .22 LRs. The flatter trajectory makes hitting small targets at uncertain ranges much easier. In a handgun, .22 Magnum velocities run around 1,400-1,500 fps depending upon barrel length, but considerably short of rifle velocities.

The .22 Jet, announced in March, 1961, was made by necking-down the .357 Magnum. Claimed ballistics were a 40-grain bullet at 2,460 fps, evidently taken in a closed breech barrel. S&W chambered the excellent Model 53 revolver for the Jet. Velocities ran around 1,850 to 2,000 fps depending upon barrel length. Bottleneck cartridges generally aren't compatible with revolvers. Functioning problems resulted in the Jet revolvers being discontinued, and they are now collectors' items. I wish I had one.
