Elmer Keith museum is open! Cabela's in Boise, new home

American Handgunner,  May-June, 2008  by Roy Huntington

[ILLUSTRATIONS OMITTED]

Thanks to the efforts of many, including our own John Taffin, the Elmer Keith Museum is now open to the public. Housed in the spanking-new Cabela's in Boise, Idaho, the museum houses Elmer's important firearms, game animal mounts and memorabilia.

Visitors can find an animated likeness of Elmer sitting at his desk, and thanks to a recorded interview done just before his death, you can hear "Elmer" talk to you in his own words and voice! There are too many famous guns to mention, but suffice to say, if you saw it in print over the years, you'll see them here. From the famous "Number 5" to Elmer's many N-frame S&Ws, you can actually see the real things, thanks to Cabela's.

Elmer Keith wrote for sister publication GUNS Magazine in the late 1950s, until he "jumped-ship" and went to Guns & Ammo. I still enjoy sneaking off to the reference library at our offices to look through those classic back-issues. Elmer's insight, coupled with the fact "He was there," helped to make him the legend he has become. He could be cranky, obstinate and opinionated, but there's no denying his many contributions to what we all love to do--shoot. I'm sure I speak for the entire fraternity when I say thanks to Cabela's for helping to make this happen.
