Hinderer modular pen

American Handgunner, Nov-Dec, 2008 by Roy Huntington

When is a pen not a pen--but still is a pen? I know, it makes my brain hurt too, but old friend Rick Hinderer, knife-maker and fire fighter, has developed a line of "self-defense" pen kits. These wear multiple hats as self-defense impact weapons, focusing on the "kubaton" concept where you can use striking and pain-compliance to control a bad guy. And the best part is the pens come in "kits" with lots of fun and interesting accessories so you can basically configure your particular pen for either the job at hand, or how you want to carry it on a daily basis.

The workmanship is simply stunning, and the series comes in titanium, titanium "Extreme Duty," and an aluminum "Extreme Duty" option. Using CNC and CAD/CAM technology, they are consistent, elegantly detailed with texturing and features, and rock solid in construction. A "kit" like the one featured has a wide selection of accessory tips, from a plain end, to a pocket clip, armor point, keychain and other "kubaton" attachments. It all comes in a nifty Pelican case with fitted compartments.

This is an extremely high quality set and would be a great gift for a soldier, police officer or anyone who is interested in low-profile protection options--or just having cool stuff! A complete kit like the one shown runs around $290 or so, but you can customize one with just the accessories you need, so the price really depends on what you want to buy.
