Nearly equal numbers of teens surf the web at home (64%) as at school (66%), according to the Teen Caravan survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation. Twenty one percent log on at a friend's house and 12% access the Net from the library. Asked what they were using the web for, 89% report using the Internet for research for school.

Another 68% cited email and 46% reported spending time in chat rooms. Researching weather, sports and news was cited by 48% of teens. Nineteen percent report playing games, 17% shopping and 14% logging on for music. Teenage girls are twice as likely as boys to spend time in chat rooms; boys are twice as likely to participate in online gaming.
