National Cable Television Association - Brief Article

Internet Strategies for Education Markets: The Heller Report, Feb, 2000

The cable television industry's deployment of free, high-speed cable modem service has more than doubled over the past year, said Robert Sachs, National Cable Television Association president and ceo. The announcement was made at an address to the 2000 State Educational Technology Leadership Conference. Today, said Sachs, cable companies are providing free, high-speed Internet service to school and public libraries in more than 1,100 communities in the US. That figure is up from 692 communities (2,500 schools and libraries) in October of 1998.

nschool.com (Norcross, GA, www.nschool.com) is a new player offering schools free communications systems for teachers, students, parents and administrators. The web-based system provides schools with secure and customizable calendars, e-mail, forums, pointers to an array of web resources and other features. The company requires technology administrators to adopt the free, sponsor-supported system. nschool was first implemented in August 1999 and is currently working with more than 350 schools in nearly 30 states. The company is now gearing up their presence in trade pubs and trade shows. This month they will announce a number of strategic partnerships. Daniel Dooley, ceo, chairman arid co-founder comes from a K-12 fundraising background with Fundraising Innovations. Lindsey L. Cook, president and co-founder, is responsible for strategic management, partnership investment and product development. He previously developed construction project management software.
