Internet Strategies for Education Markets: The Heller Report, March, 2001

Education World (EW, Princeton, NJ, www.educationworld.com) recently laid off 18 employees, leaving the company with 21 people. It also closed two offices, and now has executive offices in New Jersey and editorial offices in Connecticut.

The company has also hired a new editor-in-chief, Forrest Stone, who comes to EW from Weekly Reader. Ted Elston, former vp, marketing/pr, cited serious market conditions and the need to cut costs. Kevin Howell, ceo, concurs that the market has been challenging over the past nine months, but he believes the trimmed-down company is in a strong position to achieve its vision of becoming "the voice of advocacy for America's teachers." Howell points to new content management technologies -- ATG's Dynamo used in combination with Interwoven's Teamsite -- that have eliminated the need for the company to manually create HTML pages. He expects to announce several strategic relationships in the near future.
