New York Times Upfront, March 10, 2008

A GIANT SPERM WHALE died after becoming stranded on a beach near the port of Songxia in southeastern China in January. Local fishermen believe that strong currents carried the 52-foot-long, 20-ton whale to the beach. Immortalized in Herman Mellville's Moby Dick, sperm whales were the mainstays of the whaling industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, and today are considered vulnerable to extinction by the World Conservation Union. Scientists plan to use the whale's carcass for research.
