Symbian Venture Wins European Commission Approval

Computergram International, August 13, 1998

The European Commission has approved the formation of Symbian Ltd, having reviewed the company's structure, activities and ownership. Symbian was formed in June as a joint venture between European telecommunications giants LM Ericsson Telefon AB, Nokia Oy and UK handheld computer maker Psion Plc (CI No 3,439).

It's working on an operating system for mobile wireless applications that it hopes will become a standard, basing its work on Psion's EPOC real-time operating system. Symbian said it is now expanding its operations in London, Japan and the USA, and is looking to double its headcount by the end of 1999.
