NEC Claims First With 128Mb Rambus DRAM

Computergram International, March 16, 1999

NEC Corp is claiming a first with the announcement of a 128Mb direct rambus dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip. The South Korean company claims that the 800MHz component will start sample production in April, with volume shipments expected in July. The firm is currently producing 72MB direct rambus DRAMs.

NEC says that the demand for rambus - bus technology that allows data transfer speeds up to eight times that of conventional DRAMs - is being driven by the increasing use of 3D graphics in everyday applications and the expansion of the internet.
