LG Semicon Goes to HP for $10m in Rambus Testing Systems

Hewlett-Packard Co has won a $10m plus order from LG Semicon Co for its HP 95000 High Speed Memory Series test systems. The expense and difficulties of high volume testing has been one of the factors delaying the ramp up of Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory devices, expected to explode once Intel Corp releases its Rambus-compliant Camino chipset later this year.

LG says it will use the systems to test 16 Rambus devices simultaneously. HP says it's been working with Rambus Inc for eight years, and understands the problems of testing ICs running at 800MHz and above. It says that some other production test system suppliers "are just beginning to understand the difficulty."
