Agfa Backs Xaar on Development of New Printheads

Computergram International, March 30, 1999

Agfa-Gevaert NV has signed a joint agreement with Xaar Plc, the ailing UK-based inkjet printing technology firm, to help finance the development of a range of 9-inch and 12.6-inch printheads. Agfa plans to use the printheads in its digital printing products. Xaar, which earlier this month reported 1998 losses of 4.6m pounds as a result of the economic crisis in the Far East, is already getting backing to develop the new printheads from Kyocera Corporation of Japan.

With the use of piezo ceramic wafer printing heads, Xaar believes that inkjet technology can overcome speed disadvantages and offer real competition to the laser.
