Mitsubishi Hands More Computer Business to IBM

Computergram International, April 23, 1999

Continuing the restructuring of its unprofitable computer operations, Mitsubishi Electric Corp is handing over its high-end business to IBM Japan Ltd. Its existing agreement with IBM on servers is being extended to include systems development and corporate sales. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports that Mitsubishi has transferred 150 engineers to the systems division from the hardware and operating system divisions, and will raise the number by a further 150 to a total of 2,800 in fiscal 2000.

Computer business revenue was the equivalent of $2.45bn in 1998 compared with an expected $2.55bn. It wants to do $3.4bn next year. It has already phased out PC production in favor of servers.
