Yahoo Signs UK's Virtual Internet for Domain Registration

Computergram International, May 24, 1999

Shares in VirtualInternet.net Plc jumped 13.75% to close at 2.73 pounds ($4.37) Friday, after the UK internet services firm it announced an exclusive deal to provide domain name registration, web site hosting and e-commerce applications to Yahoo Inc. Virtual Internet said it intends to use the deal, and the similar deals with AOL/CompuServe Europe to become the number one domain registration service in Europe, before moving into the US market.

Virtual Internet was accredited last month by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) as one of 34 registrars of .com, .org and .net domain names, part of the de-monopolization of the registrar industry. Yahoo, as well as being in the top ten most frequented UK web sites, also runs a subscription-free internet access service, and free web-based email, which makes it a powerful partner for London Stock Exchange-listed Virtual Internet.
