Despite denials from Intel Corp, it looks likely that the company will abandon the 66MHz front side bus for its Celeron line and stop the associated LX chipset by the first half of next year. Intel has long said that it has no plans to stop supporting the FSB Celeron. However, according to some Asian news sites, Taiwanese manufacturers have said that they will stop manufacturing the LX chipset by September this year.

A 500MHz Celeron using a 100MHz FSB is expected to be announced in the fourth quarter of this year. Intel's ZX and i810 chipsets will replace the LX as the entry-level infrastructure for mainstream PCs. All of Intel's Celeron range will likely use a 100MHz FSB by the middle of 2000. Michelle Johnston, branded desktop board product line manager at Intel, denied that there were any changes in Intel's plans for the 66MHz FSB Celeron.
