Computergram International, August 13, 1999

Taiwan will become the world's largest notebook computer maker this year, with production expected to be 8.73 million units or about 50% of the worldwide total according to the island's semi-official Market Intelligence Centre. Production will be up more than 43% from last year said center director Victor Tsan, with year-on-year output for the first half having been up 64.1% to 4.1 million units.

The combined value in 1999 of all computer products made in Taiwan, including notebooks, would grow an estimated 18% to $34.3bn. It amounted to $15.3bn in the first half.
