Guitar Maker Gibson Buys Midi Music House Opcode

Computergram International, June 2, 1998

Gibson Musical Instruments Inc, makers of the legendary Gibson Les Paul guitar, has acquired Opcode Systems Inc, the Palo Alto- based producer of MIDI music production software and hardware. Opcode, best known for its Studio Vision Pro software line, will be run as an independent subsidiary. Terms of the merger were not disclosed.

Opcode was founded in 1985, and Gibson first took out stock in the company in 1995. Gibson says it will invest in Opcode research and development to boost the number of products and speed up time to market. The two said they would also leverage each other's dealer base.
