Indian Government Looking To Boost Software Exports

Computergram International, July 6, 1998

The Indian government is planning a fresh package of concessions for the Indian Information Technology sector, with the objective of boosting software exports and increasing IT penetration in the country. The package will include classification of the IT sector as a priority sector for easier access to bank funding (currently only software exporters benefit from this status), floating venture capital funds and allowing greater depreciation benefits on computer hardware.

The government is also examining the possibility of bringing forward the World Trade Organization (WTO) IT agreement by a year. With this, items that would come under the WTO tariff barrier by the year 2000 would be brought within its scope by January 1999.
