Congress Approves $142m Internet2 Funding

Computergram International, Sept 18, 1998

The House of Representatives has approved $142m of funding for the Next Generation Internet project over the next two fiscal years. The bill, sponsored by house Science Committee chairman James Sensenbrenner calls for $67m in fiscal 1999 and fiscal 2000 and was pushed through a fast track process as it faced little opposition.

Next Generation Internet, or Internet2 is the high- speed network being built to link US universities through a non- profit company called University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID). More than 120 universities are combining in the effort, together with funding and equipment from companies including 3Com, Cisco, IBM, Qwest and Northern Telecom.
