Samsung announced yesterday that it had delivered samples of 1 gigabit synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) chips to its major customers: Compaq Computer Corp, Dell Computer Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co, IBM Corp and Sun Microsystems Inc. The chips are manufactured using a 0.18 micron process and tantalum oxide film to produce a die size measuring 18.8 x 3.2 mm, or 569mm.

Samsung said that the tantalum oxide film has a dielectric constant that is about three times higher than conventional oxide nitrate film and is the key to the 0.18-micron circuitry.
