Symantec Releases Jit Java Compiler 3.0

Computergram International, Jan 16, 1998

Symantec Corp has announced the availability of version 3.0 of its Just-In-Time (JIT) Java compiler, which is integrated into its Visual Cafe for Java development tool. It is also used by Netscape Communications Corp in Communicator and by Sun Microsystems Inc in its Java Runtime for Windows software package.

JITs increase the speed of Java execution by converting Java byte codes to native code on the fly before it is run by the Java virtual machine, or JVM. The Cupertino company claims an overall Caffeinemark score of 1,676 for the JIT, versus 993 for its previous version. Visual Cafe users can download it from the company's web site today and licensees will begin integrating it into their products.
