short takes - forecasts about ATM - Industry Trend or Event - Brief Article

Communications News, Oct, 1999

On broadband access: "... The battle between ATM and IP will result in a converged standard capable of providing `acceptable' QoS within four years, or sooner. Between advanced network processor chips in wirespeed switch-routers and new protocol acceptance, the `battle' will disperse to only major skirmishes over application turf."--Donald Dittberner, president, Dittberner Associates, Inc.

On ATM as a multiservice platform: "The rapid increase of digital data transmissions demands more bandwidth and reliable QoS solutions.... ATM provides fast switching and makes management and control of internetworking considerably easier. [ATM] also supports transmission by which all types of traffic-particularly audio, video, and data--can be sent."--Michael Janowiak, director of publications, International Engineering Consortium.
