Optical networking
LIGHT-POLARIZATION PROCESSING and liquid-crystal technologies increase the capacity and reduce the cost of optical networks. Chorum Technologies, Inc. has developed its PolarWave line of products comprised of optical slicers (pictured), DWDM routers, optical switches, optical processors, and integrated optical systems. Slicers perform advanced optical filtering, called interleave filtering. By using optical slicers in long-haul DWDM networks, users can transmit terabits of information on a single fiber. Chorum's DWDM routers build modular, passive optical multiplexing and demultiplexing systems that support hundreds of channels at data rates of 10 Gbps and higher. These integrated optical systems combine switching, filtering, and processing technologies for advanced applications, such as optical add/ drop multiplexing or optical cross-connects.--Chorum Technologies, Inc.

Service-level management
MEASURE THE PERFORMANCE OF IP network and application services from the perspective of an end user. Inverse Network Technology, Inc. has released Version 4.2 of IP InSight, which improves the ability of customer-care center and network-operations personnel to solve end-user access problems and measure network performance. The IP InSight Dial Care application facilitates a help desk's primary goal--to address remote users' problems. Recent trends in the POP infrastructure are analyzed for call history and display of the aggregated call failure rates (CFR) for each of the POPs the user has recently dialed, indicating the major failure causes. IP InSight has the capacity to automatically sense needed upgrades, including the automatic deployment of HTTP proxies, for supporting user communities in secure LAN environments. Inverse's product has improved alerting features, such as the ability to generate alerts when key application services (for example, DNS, HTTP, and ping) cross performance thresholds.--Inverse Network Technology, Inc.

Wireless local loop
WIRELESS NETWORKING PRODUCT forms an access point capable of speeds to 30 Mbps. Wi-LAN Inc. has designed its I.WiLL access point to meet the stringent demands of telcos, fibercos, cablecos, ISPs, and integrators. At three times the speed of the popular 10-Mbps Ethernet networks, I.WILL operates in the 2.4-2.4835 GHz license-exempt ISM band, allowing telecom suppliers to provide wireless networking connectivity at a fraction of wire, cable, or fiber networking costs. I. WiLL is the first high-speed wireless networking product that uses Wi-LAN's wide-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology, deploying a radio-frequency signal for efficient use of bandwidth.--Wi-LAN, Inc.
