Flywheel-based UPS
Most RecentTechnology Articles
ECONOMICAL AND SPACE-EFFICIENT FLYWHEEL uninterruptible power supply (UPS) protects critical electrical loads from power disturbances and provides an uninterrupted transition to a standby generator set. The Cat UPS uses energy stored in a clean, safe and environmentally friendly flywheel that eliminates the temperature restrictions, hazards, space and failure potential associated with battery-based UPS systems. The Cat UPS is battery-free and offers unlimited cycle life, the smallest available footprint, lower life-cycle costs and increased reliability, while reducing maintenance and environmental concerns. The flywheel instantaneously supplies power with a 98% efficiency in place of the utility when a power disturbance is detected. For coverage of long-term outages or brownouts, the Cat UPS has the ability to send a start signal and provide redundant starting power to a standby generator set After the event, the Cat UPS returns to a normal standby state and the flywheel recharges, either from utility power or the standby generator. Convenience features include an easy-to-read LCD panel, audible alarms, paging, e-mail notification and microprocessor-based operation that allows for programmable generator set walk-in and other set-up parameters. Remote monitoring via Internet or direct-dial access is also available.--Caterpillar

Modular UPS
MODULAR UPS SYSTEM provides flexibility and redundancy for a variety of enterprise power-protection needs. The Nfinity UPS system provides true online power protection, and is scalable from 4 to 16 kVA. The modular design is configurable with any combination of power or battery modules to maximize redundancy and battery backup times as required. Each power module is hot-swappable, allowing users to replace modules without disturbing connected equipment. Premium-quality power is assured by utilizing current-sharing technology that provides equal distribution of power among all modules. Sensors troubleshoot and isolate modules as necessary to protect the battery network. Nfinity offers multiple communications paths to monitor and control the UPS for both in-band and out-of-band communications, including a front-panel display, direct serial connection, remote access from the network via SNMP or by modem. The unit is shipped assembled and factory-tested.--Liebert

Fiberless infrared LAN
WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION provides the reliability required by enterprise network environments. The WaveBridge Multiplex (MT) Series of infrared fiberless links provides fast, high-speed connectivity. This high-bandwidth solution uses the infrared spectrum to cure the ongoing problems of frequency and interference experienced with competing radio frequency solutions. The WaveBridge MT series is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the GSM communications and ISP markets. These links enable ISP and GSM providers to transmit data at high-bandwidth speeds over Ethernet, while continuing to offer T-1/E-1 speeds together or separately in the same unit. A user can access his telephone lines and Ethernet data transmission over the same link. WaveBridge solutions do not require licensing, and are easy to install, safe, secure, reliable and robust to avoid costly network downtime. Unlike other network solutions, these fiberless links can be densely co-located to provide large bandwidth connectivity without the frequency problems associated with crowded airwaves.--Plaintree Systems
