Data mirror cruises Atlantic - Company Operations

Communications News, Feb, 2001

P&O Nedlloyd Container Line Ltd., one of the world's largest container carriers, needed an efficient method to share and protect data between its East Rutherford, NJ, and London offices--as well as around the globe. The company--a joint venture of P&O, the oldest and largest of the British shipping companies, and Royal Nedlloyd--has shipping routes connecting all parts of the globe with an annual revenue of about $4 billion.

The firm implemented data mirroring developed by Minnesota-based CNT and Massachusetts-based EMC, specializing, respectively, in storage networking solutions and in information storage systems, software, networks and services.

Data moves over P&O Nedlloyd's private IP network using EMC's Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) software and CNT's UltraNet Storage Director networking solution. Unlike conventional data copying solutions that require host-based computer resources, SRDF over IP has no host involvement in the mirroring operation.

Using the firm's existing IP-based intranet, the EMC/CNT solution mirrors data and applications from East Rutherford to London, lowering the cost and complexity of sharing and protecting information around the globe.

"Consolidating our U.S.-based data centers to our London location has enabled us to further enhance the efficiency of our IT operations," says Bob Post, P&O Nedlloyd's IT general manager.
