Hold the spam, please

Communications News, April, 2004

SPam and its accompanying worms and viruses continue to be a high-priority concern for enterprises. Temple University in Philadelphia, for example, has standardized on an antivirus solution to protect its cyber infrastructure. Additionally, Temple is utilizing another product to accelerate the deployment and maintenance of servers and workstations.

Symantec's AntiVirus Corporate Edition was chosen to shield servers and desktops used by more than 36,000 students, staff and faculty members from viruses, worms and other malicious code threats. "Blocking entry of malicious code that could compromise our network requires a holistic approach, given our vast numbers of users and connected systems," says Timothy O'Rourke, vice president of computer and information services for Temple University. "Temple's awareness campaign around safe computing practices and Symantec's centrally managed antivirus solution are instrumental in protecting our university population from viruses and worms posing risks to thousands of networked devices."

Complementing the university's selection for centrally managed virus protection, Temple IT administrators also utilize Symantec Ghost to accelerate deployment and maintenance of university computers. Using the product's central-management console, university IT staff can remotely install of restore OS and application software across the network, streamlining the installation of new computers and recovery of systems needing repair.

AntiVirus Corporate Edition offers centralized policy management with scalable, cross-platform virus protection for workstations and network servers. Its NAVEX and Digital Immune System technologies provide hands-free virus detection, analysis and repairs via automated submission and response mechanisms.

YMCA CHOOSES SERVICE PROVIDER

The YMCA of the USA (Y-USA), the national resource office for America's 2,540 YMCAs, decided e-mail protection and control was better left to a service provider. The organization selected MX Logic's Email Defense Service for around-the-clock e-mail protection from spam and other unwanted content.

"Collectively, the nation's YMCAs are the largest nonprofit community service organization, serving more than 18.9 million people across the country," says Richard Whitney, director of technology services, Y-USA. "As the national resource for all the YMCAs, we do not have the time to deal with, nor can we afford to be flooded with spam and other unwanted mail."

MX Logic's service catches spam before it enters Y-USA's network and blocks it before it can consume resources and bandwidth and increase storage.

By mid-2004, spam will account for 60% of all Internet e-mail traffic, according to Gartner, which says spam today accounts for half of all Internet e-mail traffic. The rapid growth of spam traffic results in an associated increase in bandwidth and e-mail storage costs, a decrease in employee productivity, and an increase in corporate liability.

Built to provide reliable e-mail protection and security, the Email Defense solution blocks unsolicited email before it enters of leaves the corporate network. MX Logic's Stacked Classification FrameworkSM, its multilayered spam-detection system, aggregates the five most effective spam-fighting filters and techniques in the industry, filters up to 98.5% of spam and enables a low false positive rate.
