SERVER, LAN, VPN MARKET REPORTS

Big Blue is still the 800-pound gorilla in the worldwide server market, according to the latest report from research firm IDC. In 2000, IBM (www.ibm.com) shipped more than 608,000 servers, 77% more than Sun Microsystem's (www.sun.com) nearly 344,000. In the fourth quarter of last year, IBM also passed Unix server maker Hewlett-Packard (www.hp.com) in Unix server market share.... Local area network equipment sales are expected to grow by an annual average of more than 27% through 2005, according to a study by Business Communications Co. (www.bccresearch.com). The study predicts the ethernet market will comprise more than 50% of the $236 billion in total sales in 2005.... Infonetics Research (www.infonetics.com) has identified NetScreen Technologies (www.netscreen.com) as first in the number of low-end (100 or fewer tunnels) VPN hardware units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2000. According to the report, VPN hardware revenues totaled $835 million in 2000, with firewall sales hitting $1.1 billion.

MIXED NEWS ON THE BROADBAND FRONT

The broadband modern market slowed in revenue and units shipped in the last quarter of 2000, foreshadowing the current technology slowdown, according to a report from Cahners In-Stat Group. Alcatel (www.alcatel.com) was the market leader for DSL customer premise equipment shipments, while 3Com's (www.3com.com) market share increased from 10% to 19% in the quarter.... Broadwing Communications (www.broadwing.com) has completed its all-optical central ring, the second of three rings in its 18,500-mile long-haul network.... Lucent Technologies (www.lucent.com), in a $25-million deal, will supply optical access technology for Jazztel plc's fiber-optic network in Spain and Portugal.... Hybrid Networks (www.hybrid.com) is supplying Sprint (www.sprint.com) with high-end equipment for managing data transmission and wireless broadband routers for customers in the Chicago area.... Cable & Wireless (www.cw.com) is leasing 24 dark fiber strands for service in several U.S. cities from American Fiber Systems (www.american fibersystems.com).

NO SLOWDOWN FOR E-BUSINESS

E-business expenditures by end-users are expected to increase from $4.3 billion this year to $11.6 billion in 2005, a 171% jump, according to Infonetics Research. The growth will be fueled by caching, storage and server technologies.... According to The Kelsey Group (www.kelseygroup.com), "The voice Web and voice applications markets will reach $41 billion by 2005.... BMC Software (www.bmc.com), a provider of e-business systems management, will use ATM network services from Qwest Communications (www.qwest.com) and KPNQwest (www.kpnqwest.com) for its U.S. and European operations.... Global One (www.globalone.com) has expanded its international voice over IP service to support e-business activity in Asia, Europe and the Americas. The company now provides its VPN service to more than 220 countries and territories. The company also announced a major data and voice contract with DuPont Corp. (www.dupont.com) to interconnect its 150 sites in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, using frame relay and ATM.
