Beyond 2000 - report predicts increase in satellite and PCS services, decline in cellular - Industry Trend or Event - Brief Article

Communications News, June, 1999

Telecom Outlook Report: 1999-2010 offers an authoritative overview of critical business and technology trends affecting the telecommunications industry through 2010. Based on the surveys of more than 250 industry experts, the study was developed jointly by the International Engineering Consortium (IEC) and the University of Southern California (USC) Center for Telecommunications Management.

The report examines key strategies, industry dynamics, global communications, and national policy and regulation. It also addresses new services, wireless markets, Internet access, IPtelephony, and new technology applications. Telecom Outlook predicts that satellite and PCS services will gain a substantially increased share of the wireless market by 2010. This increase will come at the expense of cellular, projected to drop from a 60% market share in 2000 to just 20% in 2010.
